DESCRIPTION
The city of Philippi was founded by King Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC, strategically placed to control the rich gold mines of the area and the route of Via Egnatia. Centuries later, it became a major Roman city, famous for the Battle of Philippi (42 BC) and for being one of the earliest centers of Christianity in Europe. Our 3.5-hour guided tour begins at the Archaeological Site of Philippi, where you will explore the ruins of the forum, basilicas, and theatre. Before leaving the site, we enjoy a simple yet authentic treat: souvlaki in hand with a slice of bread, accompanied by a cold beer or soft drink, served at the refreshment area of the archaeological park. Next, we visit the Baptistery of Saint Lydia, the first European woman baptized by Apostle Paul, a sacred place that highlights the spread of Christianity in Europe. The tour then continues to Kavala, with a short walking route: passing by the impressive Aqueduct (Kamares), admiring the Imaret, and ascending on foot to the House of Mehmet Ali, founder of modern Egypt. We conclude with a sweet local tradition: tasting a traditional Kavala kourabie, the famous almond shortbread that symbolizes the city's hospitality.
